Okay, we’re settled in onerous/grievous/difficult/trying times this April, 2020, as the television ads continue to remind us, ad nauseum. We’re counseled on how to survive, including by eating comfort food and reading comfort books. And we all have “comfort” books; mine are anything by the late, great Laurie Colwin and the even later and greater Jane Austen. Books that emphasize the good things and people in life, with a dollop of reality thrown in to make things interesting. Well, another, newer “comfort book” might be Bess Kalb’s new book, “Nobody Will Tell You This But Me”.Kalb’s book is a memoir of sorts centering on Bess Kalb and her recently deceased grandmother, Bobby Bell. (“Bobby” is short for her real name, “Barbara”). We know when we begin the book the Bobby has recently died at the age of 90 at her Florida house, leaving behind her husband Hank and many other family and friends mourning her loss. Bobby was one of those amazing grandmothers who was larger than life and one you were glad to know but equally glad wasn’t your own grandmother.Kalb’s book is based on real emails and telephone messages Bess and Bobby had exchanged over the years. But most of the rest of the book was written using imagined conversations between the characters. I have no idea what’s made up, but Kalb makes it pretty clear in her afterword how she wrote the book. Most of the book is in Bobby’s voice as she addresses Bess.“Nobody Will Tell You But Me” is the story of four generations of women. Beginning in Belarus in the late 1800’s, the tale begins with the escape of Bobby’ mother to the “Goldene Medina” (the US). She was 12 when she ran away from home and began the long, arduous trip. She made a life for hersel and her four sons...and one daughter. The years pass and each generation makes an even more successful life here. But the mothers and daughters in each generation clash the way most do. Particularly egregious were the spats between Bobby and her own daughter, Robin. There was also much love between the women.I’m not as sure I would have liked this book as much as I did if we weren’t mired in these strange, etc times. But it’s a beautifully written book that explores both the love and anger between generations of strong women.
